stamps have been placed. Scavenging can occur only when aging is enabled. Both aging and scavenging are disabled by default. To enable aging for a particular zone, you have to enable this feature both at the zone level and at the server level. To enable aging at the zone level, in the Zone Aging/Scav enging Properties dialog box, select the Scavenge Stale Resource Records check box. To enable aging at the server level, first open the Server Aging/Scavenging Properties dialog box by right-clicking the server icon in the DNS console and then clicking Set Aging/Scavenging For All Zones. Then, in the Server Aging/Scavenging Properties dia log box, select the Scavenge Stale Resource Records check box. After aging is enabled, a timestamp based on the current server time is placed on all dynamically registered records in the zone. When the DHCP Client service or DHCP server later performs a dynamic update of the records, a timestamp refresh is attempted. Manually created resource records are assigned a timestamp of 0; this value indicates that they will not be aged.

A forest is a grouping or hierarchical arrangement of one or more domain trees that form a disjointed namespace, but might share a common schema and Global Catalog (see Figure 14-4). In the example shown in Figure 14-4, the namespace microsoft.com is represented in one tree, and the namespace msn.com is represented in another. There is always at least one forest on a network, and it is created when the first Active Directory enabled computer (domain controller) on a network is installed. This first domain in a forest, called the forest root domain, is special because it holds the schema and controls domain naming for the entire forest. It cannot be removed from the forest without removing the entire forest itself. Also, no other domain can ever be created above the forest root domain in the forest domain hierarchy.

Partial classes allow you to split a class definition across multiple source files. The benefit of this approach is that it hides details of the class definition so that derived classes can focus on more significant portions. The Windows Form class is an example of a built-in partial class. In Visual Studio 2003 and earlier, forms classes included code generated by the form designer. Now that code is hidden in a partial class named form.Designer.vb or form.Designer.cs. In Visual Basic, you must select Show All Files in the Solution Explorer to see the partial class files. In C#, that view is enabled by default. Partial classes aren t part of the exam objectives, but you need to know about them so that you can find the Form Designer code when you create a new Windows Form.
